LOST PROPERTIES – WINTER EXHIBITION 2009
Our 2009 exhibition was the culmination of a year of hard work and research.
The exhibition was enjoyed by many people and was a great success. Many people who came were surprised at the number of both large and small properties that were demolished over the years to make way for the housing that we all benefit from today.
The exhibition contained a large number of historic photographs, some of which had never been seen before in public.
Many of the buildings that were featured, were in the hamlet of Hale End. This area, centred around the Royal Oak, has been in continuous settlement since the 7th century.
The exhibition also coincided with the unveiling of a historical information board on the former Hale End green, which is now a triangular junction at the bottom of Oak Hill.
The borough’s very knowledgeable conservation officer, Guy Osborne, designed the board and wrote the text on it.
The committee of the Highams Park Society hopes that all of the new interest in the history of the original local settlement will lead to the revival of Hale End as local place name.
THE HPS FILM CLUB
Our first film club event was held in November in Highams Park Baptist Church.
We showed “Passport to Pimlico”, a comedy made by Ealing Studios. The story, about a group of Londoners battling with local authority bureaucracy, has a particularly topical relevance with our ongoing issues with Tesco and local bureaucracy!
The setting of the Baptist church was an excellent one for our film and we are very grateful that the Reverend Jonathan Boyce, the church council and congregation gave us permission to use the chapel for our film club. We plan to hold the next film club matinee on Saturday 20th February when we will present “Swing Time”, a Ginger Rodgers and Fred Astaire film. Our presentation in March will be “Cinema Paradiso” on the 27th.
2010 …
The big local story last year was Tesco’s application for the old Halex site.
The Highams Park Society was one of the local groups the campaigned against the proposal. This was not because we are an anti-Tesco group, but because the committee of the society, after examining the plans in detail, felt that the scale, design and tone were not right for our neighbourhood.
Whatever happens with the Tesco proposal, we feel that it is necessary to focus on positive things in the forthcoming year. We are currently involved in the following initiatives: the station gardens, the setting up of a HPS bookshops and community space, Highams Park Day 2010, the running of a Sundays farmers’ market and the regeneration of the village centre.
We would like to leaflet everyone in Highams Park about our plans in order to get as many people involved as possible. If you can deliver any leaflets at all, please contact Andrew Golds on 0208 531 2938.
